It appears Thiago Alves and Josh Koscheck will have an extra added incentive for their upcoming UFC 90 bout in Chicago next weekend, the winner of the fight will get a shot at the Welterweight Championship next.
According to Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer the two young talented welterweights will get a shot at the winner of the Georges St.Pierre vs BJ Penn bout that will take place on Super Bowl weekend on January 31.

GSP vs Koscheck
Koscheck fought St.Pierre back at UFC 74 last year and lost by unanimous decision. Koscheck’s wrestling game was often stuffed and used against him being put on his back by St.Pierre. Since then Koscheck has won two fights in a row in an attempt to get back in contention. With a injury to adversary Diego Sanchez a few weeks back, Koscheck seized the opportunity to take his place against Thiago Alves at UFC 90.
With only one week to go to their bout I am sure St.Pierre and Penn will be watching along with us interested in the result of the bout.
Update – As we reported to you yesterday the fight between Josh Koscheck vs Thiago Alves will be for number 1 contender to Georges St.Pierre’s Welterweight title.
Dana White confirmed the status of the winner as top contender to Fighters Only, which should put an extra added incentive for their fight at UFC 90.
“Yeah, obviously, White told fighters only”
“Obviously Thiago Alves had a couple of big wins, knocking out Karo Parisyan, knocking out Matt Hughes, and Koscheck is the guy who beat Diego Sanchez,” White explained.
We love to keep you updated as usual on anything we come across, so we are glad we reported this to you yesterday.
This should have been the first fight anyway kos deserved this fight more then diego

I don’t think so. I think Diego has fought tougher competition. He lost to Kos when he had that staph infection.
Would’ve been nice to see him fight Alves first. Would’ve like to see Alves knock him out, but Kos will do.
I see Alves beating Kos, but in case he doesn’t, I think the reason they first had Sanchez against Alves too, besides he earned it, no one wants to see Koscheck get dominated by GSP again 5 rounds this time instead of 3.

Vallo Kos beat Sanchez back at UFC 69 so he probably should have the call first for Thiago, but either way the fight is happening.

Agreed, Kos will need to improve his stand up to compete with GSP

I think if Thiago comes in inflates back to 180 pound he will kill St.Pierre he is talented too but he has to get passed kos which is not easy

So Alves has to get passed a tough Kos and if he does that hes gonna kill GSP. Thats about the dumbest thing ive heard
