Davis (bottom) submitting Kelly at UFC 89 last Saturday will be on UFC 93 card

This past Sturday at UFC 89 in Birmingham, England welterweight contender Marcus Davis had defeated the previously unbeaten England native Paul Kelly with a second round guillotine choke submission for the win and when interviewed by Joe Rogan, Davis pleaded his case to UFC officials and President Dana White that he wants to compete at the UFC 93 card in Dublin, Ireland on January 17 where Davis’ family heritage is from.

Now in a recent interview with Eurosport-Yahoo!, “The Irish Hand Grenade” tells them that the organization has offered him a spot on the upcoming January card after sending them tons of emails and phone calls since the announcement was made that the UFC was going to Dublin.

“I really wanted to be on the Ireland card, the UFC definitely knew that,” Davis told Eurosport-Yahoo!. “They know that it makes good sense to have someone with an Irish background on the card to help market it.”

Now that Davis knows he will be a part of the UFC 93 Dublin card an opponent has yet to be announced, but Chris “Lights Out” Lytle who also competed at UFC 89 last Saturday defeated a very game Paul Taylor and told Joe Rogan after the fight he was going to call out Davis for a fight. Lytle said that he has nothing but respect for Davis and he would like nothing more than to have his next fight with Davis, but Davis appears to feel differently about the matter.

Is Lytle worth facing Davis at UFC 93?

Is Lytle worth facing Davis at UFC 93?

“I don’t mind Chris calling me out, it’s part of the game. I certainly didn’t take offence. He had warned me beforehand that he was going to do it, so I don’t consider it disrespectful or anything.

“I like Chris and think he is a great guy but I don’t know whether he deserves a fight against me. People always say that Chris is the ‘gatekeeper’ to our division, but I think that I am past the gate at the moment.

“I have spoken to a few people who have told me that they actually think Paul Taylor won that fight against Chris. I beat Paul in one round (in September 2007), so I’m just not sure.

“But, of course, if that is the fight that the UFC want, then I am more than happy.”

A fight between Davis and Lytle would make a lot of sense given that both guys would be a step up in competition to test one another and could be a high profile win for each fighter respectively with Lytle losing to such fighters as Matt Hughes, Thiago Alves and most recently to Josh Koscheck at UFC 86 in July. Davis on the other hand has also lost to Alves and Mike Swick in his MMA career. Lytle’s match up with Paul Taylor last week won “Fight of the Night” honors and a fight with Marcus Davis would also get the same honor in my opinion as well, but we will keep you informed should it be Chris Lytle that would be facing Davis in Dublin, Ireland come January 2009.
