Silva vs Sonnen?

It appears that the UFC may already have Anderson Silva’s next opponent in former WEC Middleweight Chael Sonnen, according to Sonnen. This appears to be unlikely, but crazier things have happened in the UFC, when bringing new champions from other organizations.

Sonnen spoke to GracieMag.com about his first fight in the UFC just before his fight with Paulo Filho.

“Once I’m in the UFC, my first adversary will be Anderson Silva.” Sonnen told Gracie Mag.

Sonnen has a title bout so soon?

When Sonnen was asked if the fight was confirmed and official.

“Yes, it’s confirmed.” he reiterated. ”Once I’m in the UFC I’ll fight Anderson Silva. I think he’s a great fighter, but I’m only going to start thinking about that after my fight with Paulo Filho. If you want to ask me about it after tonight, I’ll be happy to answer.”

This would have seemed logical had Sonnen beaten Filho badly, but the truth of the matter is he impressively beat a sedated looking Filho. The hype of a Champion vs Champion fight was also diminished when Filho came into the fight 7 pounds overweight on his first attempt, negating any chance Sonnen had of becoming the official Middleweight Champion of the WEC. While at first it would seem like a good idea, it would seem the UFC would be hard pressed to sell a pay per view event with the relatively unknown Sonnen. We will wait to deliver any official word from the UFC we hear in the near future about this possible bout.
