MMAJunkie had the scoop on Antonio Mendes new opponent Schafer at UFC 93 in Dublin, Ireland on January 17. They have also confirmed that bout agreements have been signed by both fighters.
Schafer is coming off of a big win at Fight Night 15 in September over Houston Alexander in his hometown of Omaha, Nebraska by Submission (Arm Triangle). It was Schafer’s first since his return to the UFC after going 1-2 in his previous 3 fights and he was released. Now Schafer will look to pick up where he left off and go after his first consecutive win streak in the UFC.
His opponent Mendes will be looking for his first win in the UFC as well at UFC 93. Mendes lost his first fight to the surging Thiago Silva back at UFC 84: ill Will by submission (punches).
Both fighters have shown that they do not go out easily and it should make for an entertaining fight. Schafer showed his resilience against Houston Alexander early in their bout when he was caught with a series of knees and punches, only to pull the fight out by submission. Mendes caught Thiago Silva early in their fight with a head kick that many thought would end the fight, but Silva’s full mount proved to be too much for Mendes moments later when he recovered. We do not know if this fight will be on the undercard portion, but we expect to see it in between the main card bouts which are filled with knockout producing match ups.
