Shortly after the dust settled on Affliction “Day of Reckoning” UFC president Dana White said he was told the event had lost over $5 Million and predicted the company would not do a third show. If the early pay per view numbers are any indication of progress in the companies efforts to become a long term player in the MMA game than the future looks bright. Reports state that Affliction “Day of Reckoning” sold between 150,000 to 200,000 pay per view buys.
MMAWeekly.com’s Insider Blog is reporting that the event sold between 150,000 to 200,000 buys.
If the report is accurate this would be an improvement over their first show “Banned”, which is rumored to have sold just below 100,000 buys on pay per view.
Affliction VP Tom Atencio also confirmed that the event sold more buys than their first event “Banned”.
No one knows if Dana White’s prediction is correct that Affliction lost money and no one will ever really know if they made money either. One of the reasons is the fact that the promotion reported that Fedor Emelianenko only made $300,000 for “Day of Reckoning”, which was also reported to be his salary for “Banned” as well.
A few weeks later a report from Dave Meltzer surfaced that Fedor had actually made a $1 Million bonus and was given his video rights as part of his compensation. Which is why no one now knows if the report that the company paid out $3.3 Million to their roster for “Day of Reckoning” is actually correct or if their other fighters also received bonuses as well.
There is also the factor of promotional partner Golden Boy’s cut of the earnings too which is rumored to be another 20%. There is also a rumor that Oscar De La Hoya was paid over $5 Million just to show for “Day of Reckoning” as well, but that rumor was denied by the Boxing legend.
Affliction VP Tom Atencio also told FiveOuncesofPain.com that there would be a third show in July or August as well.
While we may never know the true numbers of Affliction “Day of Reckoning” we do know that if they sold 150,000 to 200,000 buys on pay per view that they are making progress.
So does this mean Dana was right or wrong it never answers that question
Affliction is paying fighters off the books? what kind of shit is that
