Melvin Guillard will make his return to the Octagon for the first time since UFC 86 in July. Guillard will face off against Thiago Tavares at UFC 101 on August 8, almost one year to the day he was arrested for a parole violation in Houston, Texas.
MMAWeekly.com had the scoop on the potential fight for UFC 101, and is reporting that both fighters have agreed in principle to face each other.
Melvin Guillard (21-7) has had his ups and downs since participating on The Ultimate Fighter season 2. He was released from the UFC after losing back to back fights in the Octagon to Joe Stevenson and Rich Clementi. Guillard who had a long running war of words with Clementi, was submitted by rear naked choke at UFC 79 “Nemesis” and then mocked by his rival. Clementi yelled into the microphone “That’s called Jiu-Jitsu, Melvin” after he had already made a gesture towards him only seconds after tapping him out.
Adding insult to injury, Guillard was released to fight in smaller promotions only to come back after one fight and defeated Dennis Siver at UFC 86 in only :36 seconds by TKO. Since then, Guillard’s arrest in Houston and injuries have kept him out of action, we will find out at UFC 101 if he can extend his win streak to 3.
Thiago Tavares (14-3) also has had his ups and downs in the UFC, he came into his fight against Tyson Griffin at UFC 76 with a 12-0 record only to lose a tough decision. He then proceeded to lose two of his next three as well to Matt Wiman and Kurt Pellegrino. He bounced back with a decision win over Manny Gamburyan at UFC 94 and will look to keep on track with a win over Guillard.
This fight will probably be for a roster spot in the UFC given the fact that both fighters have not been on consistent winning streaks. We will find out at UFC 101 who wants to remain on the roster more.
