A change will need to be made in a Lightweight bout between Thiago Tavares and Melvin Guillard for The Ultimate Fighter season 9 finale as Tavares suffered an elbow injury according to his training camp at American Top Team.
Tatame.com reports that Tavares injured the elbow and will not have enough time to recover to make the June 20 card.
Tavares bounced back from a previous two fight losing skid by taking a unanimous decision win over Manny Gamburyan at UFC 94 this past January and was looking to start a new win streak of his own against Guillard, but will now have to wait a little bit longer for that opportunity to happen again.
It is uncertain as to whether or not the UFC will seek out another opponent for “The Young Assassin”, but we will keep you posted as soon as a possible replacement has been found.
UPDATE - MMAjunkie.com reports that Tavares ATT teammate Gleison Tibau has stepped up to replace him in his TUF 9 finale Lightweight bout against Melvin Guillard according to sources close to Guillard’s camp. Tibau has won his last two bouts inside the Octagon with victories over Rich Clementi at UFC Fight Night 17 in February and his most recent over Jeremy Stephens earlier this month at UFC Fight Night 18.
