Last night at UFC 98 it was a big night for young up and coming Lightweight Frankie Edgar who picked up the biggest win of his career by defeating former UFC Lightweight champion Sean Sherk and making a name for himself as a serious threat to the 155 pound championship, but most of all he showed what he can do in the stand-up game with nicely timed shots and very good foot work amongst other things that went well for the Toms River, New Jersey native.

At the UFC 98 pos-fight press conference Edgar talks about the unanimous decision victory and gives all the credit for the “W” to his Boxing coach.

“I think adding standup to my game is only going to help,” Edgar said at the post-event press conference. “My boxing coach – he hates when I call him my boxing coach – Mark Henry, he’s a perfectionist. He doesn’t let me do anything wrong. He’s really on me the whole time.
“I owe it all to him. He improved my stand-up game 100 percent.”

Edgar who is small for the Lightweight division continues to open a lot of eyes including UFC President Dana White who is now more than a believer in ‘The Answer’.

“I never give predictions on fights, but in my head I kept saying ‘There’s no way Frankie Edgar can win this fight,’” UFC President Dana White said at the conference. “He’s smaller. As long as Sherk’s been in the game – he’s bigger. They’re both wrestlers. And I’ll tell you, this kid put on an amazing show.”
“I’m blown away by his performance. He came in with a perfect gameplan and executed it perfectly and fought an amazing fight. Nobody’s ever seen him use his hands before.”

However, Edgar who is very pleased that he was able to beat a top quality fighter in Sherk knows that there is still business to take care which involves him to get a shot at the title.

“I knew I had to step my game up,” Edgar said in the cage after the fight. “Sherk is a former lightweight champ. I’m not going to hold my head too high though. I want a shot at the title.”

Edgar (10-1) has  won 5 of 6 fights inside the Octagon and has other big wins against the likes of Tyson Griffin, Hermes Franca and now Sherk and will now be on a short list of contenders in the UFC Lightweight division along with Diego Sanchez, Clay Guida and Kenny Florian, but who will be next for the young 27 year old fighting out of Summitt, New Jersey?
