After two big wins for the San Jose based StrikeForce promotion this year Nick Diaz (19-7) is absolutely one of the best fighters in Mixed Martial Arts today and according to his mentor. Cesar Gracie the Stockton, California native will move up even further in weight potentially at Light Heavyweight (205 lbs.) if a big fight was presented to him.
In a recent interview with FightHype.com Cesar Gracie who works with the likes of Nick and Nate Diaz along with Gilbert Melendez and Jake Shields says that if the right opportunity came for Nick to fight even at 205 pounds that he would not hesitate to take it.
“We’ll probably have him go back to welterweight again unless Strikeforce has something for him at middleweight. I know he wants to go back and fight at welterweight. He likes to do triathlons so he likes to stay leaner for those and it ties into the MMA. He wouldn’t have to cut that much weight if he was leaner with the workouts he has to do for the triathlons and everything. You won’t be seeing him go back to lightweight anytime soon because he’s just not very good there. His skills are good at any weight, but when he loses that much weight in the cut, he’s prone to health problems, infections and all kinds of things start happening to him. He gets very big and that’s not his natural weight. He will fight at higher weights. If something big came along, we would put him at light heavy. We would bulk him up a bit and let him fight the really big guys. I bet people would enjoy that. He’s a true old school fighter. He’s like the Gracie Jiu Jitsu guys from the old school. He will fight at any weight class. That’s the kind of fighter he is.”
Diaz has taken out StrikeForce Middleweight contenders Frank Shamrock and Scott Smith in great succession and I would not doubt that he would fight at an even higher weight class because that is the type of fighter Nick Diaz is, but with his teammate Jake Shields getting a big win over another Middleweight in Robbie Lawler, he is more likely to challenge for the StrikeForce Middleweight championship and Cung Le.
However, Diaz will be dropping to Welterweight in the meantime and should Shields not face Joe Riggs than more than likely Diaz will face the ‘Diesel’ in a rematch from their UFC days where Riggs won by decision. What do you think?

I say jack him up to LHW. Diaz vs Machida would be a full war.
What are your picks on that fight?
Is there anyone worth fighting in LHW for him?
@Fujita, Diaz would get killed by Machida, he wouldn’t be able to put his face in and taunt he would get kicked in the face
@Max B,
Ya, you’re prolly right
LMFAO I can only imagine Nick Diaz looking like a treasure troll if he figths at 205. Skinny Chest and a pot belly
Nick Diaz needs to settle first in a divison and proves himself there…No more 180 catchweight or 179 catchweight..none of that bullshit.
Diaz is a great fighter, his boxing is outstanding, and being a GRACIE jj black belt is impressive, to say the least. He WON’T FIGHT MACHIDA. He’s NOT in the UFC. Get over it. You may as well talk about Diaz fighting Fedor or something stupid like that. I’d like to see Diaz fight Lawler again, or Cung Le. He can fight at whatever weight he wants, Gracie just said he’s WILLING to fight at 205. Are you surprised? Diaz would probably accept ANY fight.
