Earlier today in Japan the World Victory Road promotion has announced an opponent for ‘The Japanese Sensation’ Akihiro Gono as he will be facing Dan Hornbuckle in his debut bout at Sengoku “Ninth Battle” at the Saitama Super Arena on August 2.

The contest will be fought at Welterweight as Gono comes over from the UFC and is also a veteran of the Pancrase, Shooto and PRIDE organizations as well.

Gono (29-14-7) was released by the UFC after back to back losses to Dan Hardy at UFC 89 last October and most recently to Jon Fitch at UFC 94 this past January after winning in his debut back at UFC 78 in a submission victory over Tamdan McCrory dating back to November of 2007.

Hornbuckle (17-2) on the other hand is a well traveled Mixed Martial Artist and will be competing the Sengoku banner for the second after being submitted by a triangle choke to Mike Pyle back at Sengoku “Second Battle” back on the month of May in 2008, but has since won two straight fights in smaller promotions.

The Sengoku “Ninth Battle” card will feature the conclusion of their Featherweight Grand Prix as the promotion will crown it’s first ever champion at that weight class. The main card will air live in the US on HDNet.
