Randy Couture knows that with a win at UFC 102 tomorrow night over former champion Antonio ‘Minotauro’ Nogueira he could be back in contention for another Heavyweight title shot against the winner of the Brock Lesnar vs Shane Carwin bout at UFC 106 in November. But that is not Couture’s focus regardless if it is his ultimate goal.
Couture spoke with UFC.com about not looking past Nogueira tomorrow night at UFC 102, because he could find himself on the losing end if he does.
“I’m not looking past Nogueira. I have to get past him first but we’ll see what fights come up here in the next little while. I don’t care about the title shot. It’s not about belts and all that other stuff to me – it’s about interesting fights and guys who are a challenge who intrigue me in the competition realm. If I’m offered an interesting fight at 205, I could make 205 easily. I’m staying right around 220 so that’s certainly within striking range for me. If there are interesting fights for me and they can give me time to get down, I’d do it for sure. Right now the interesting fights have been coming at heavyweight,” Couture explains.
That does not mean that Couture does not want to still test himself at 46 years old, as we all know he has made it no secret that he would like to try himself against Lyoto Machida. Couture this time also mentioned he would also like to fight his teammate, Anderson Silva as well.
“I’d like a rematch with Brock. I think he presents an interesting challenge. Obviously he caught me the first time but I thought I was doing things right up to that point and I was getting a lot of what I trained to do done. I’d be interested in the rematch with him solely because of him. The belt would just be the icing on the cake. I’d love to see how I match up to the style of Lyoto Machida. I think his is an intriguing style. If the UFC wanted me to fight Anderson Silva, I’d do it in a heartbeat. Certainly Anderson is the top pound-for-pound guy in the sport right now so I think he’d be an interesting fight.”
We all know that with Couture reaching 46 years of age he does not want to waste any time and wants to fight the best available fighters in the sport. That is the reason he held out for over a year, Anderson Silva would be another interesting fight for the UFC legend.
