After snapping a previous two fight losing streak former UFC Welterweight champion Matt Hughes was able to get back in the wins column when he picked up a very close unanimous decision victory over another former Welterweight champion in Matt Serra back in the month of May at UFC 98 and although Hughes has talked about calling it a career before that last fight, he has since backed off of that talk and will resume his fighting career. However, Hughes who is currently a free agent says that he will only fight for the UFC and it appears that will soon be the case.
In preparations for tonight’s UFC 102 event it was UFC President Dana White that has said during a press conference that he plans to have Hughes back competing once again sometime in early 2010.
No date was specifically mentioned, but could likely expect to see Hughes back in action once again around a UFC fight card on Super Bowl XLIV weekend which would be UFC 110 in the month of February.
The question is who will be facing Hughes across from the Octagon? Hughes has mentioned that he would like to avenge losses to Georges St-Pierre and Thiago Alves who were the last two fighters to beat him, but if that is not the case there has also been mentioned bouts of him facing Frank Trigg a third time or maybe avenging his two previous losses earlier in his career to Dennis Hallman who has been brought back by the organization not too long ago.
But the decision will likely be up to Matt Hughes and the UFC as they both look to continue and put on the best possible fights which will make sense in the end.
