Over the last week there has been a lot of heat taken to current StrikeForce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem where at the end of this month he will be competing in the opening round of the K-1 World Grand Prix tournament in Seoul, Korea with the intentions of defending the title sometime after that, but after taking so much heat from the fans and the media, Overeem says that he was no longer under contract with the promotion following his title win in November of 2007.
In a recent interview with MiddleEasy.com the ‘Demolition Man’ was asked about previous comments made by undefeated heavyweight fighter Brett Rogers as to why he has not “manned up” to defend his title.
“My contract with Strikeforce was only made about three months before the incident, I think they let me fight against (Vitor)Belfort and Paul (Buentello) to lose, but I won. Normally in a contract it says you have to defend your title within a certain period. But my contract just ended there. As I had a long term contract with FEG, I kept fighting for Dream and K-1. It’s ironic that we finally got an offer from Strikeforce and reached an agreement, and I get in some stupid brawl and cut my hand. In jail it got infected and it took longer than expected.”
So there you have it as Overeem makes his case which actually makes sense that he was not under contract with the promotion and just ran into some bad luck this year with the hand injury and I guess StrikeForce ultimately decided to keep him on as a champion since they really had no heavyweights at the time besides Paul Buentello who is now a free agent after the Affliction debacle.
But now that StrikeForce has a few heavyweights in their stable hopefully it is only a matter of time following the K-1 event where Overeem finally make a defense of his title and end all of this icing of yet another championship within the San Jose based promotion?
So here is a question, which StrikeForce title will be defended first, the middleweight title held by Cung Le or the heavyweight title which is held by Alistair Overeem?
