With UFC 105 just a week away from the M.E.N Arena in Manchester, England current welterweight contender Mike Swick who is set to face Dan Hardy for the right to earn a title shot to face welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre in 2010 responds to comments made by former UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes who has said that Swick along with his American Kickboxing Academy teammates Josh Koscheck and Jon Fitch are “not in his league” and has no desire to fight the trio.
In an exclusive interview with Heavy.com Swick says that Hughes could have stepped up to face either himself, Koscheck or Fitch once their originally scheduled opponents were out with injuries.
“Well, the only thing I know is that he definitely hasn’t stepped up and fought any of us. He doesn’t want to fight any of the guys from AKA. He didn’t have an opponent when I needed an opponent, he didn’t have an opponent when Koscheck needed an opponent and he didn’t have an opponent when Fitch needed an opponent. Those are all top-level guys which he could fight, and they would be good fights.”
Hughes also made comments that the AKA triple threat were “not worthy” of a fight with him and when asked to Swick, he added that Hughes would get beaten by any of the three AKA teammates if he was to step up and fight.
“As far as not being worthy of fighting him? That’s silly to me. I don’t think he beats any of us. I mean, I don’t think it would even be a fight. He’s a tough guy and he’s a very talented fighter. The reason we wanted to fight him isn’t because we’re picking on him, but because he’s a top-level fighter. He’s one of the highest-ranked fighters and one of the most accomplished fighters in the UFC. It’s out of respect that we wanted to fight him. If he doesn’t think we’re in his league, that’s kind of crazy to me, because I don’t think he could beat any of us. I just don’t think he could beat us. Maybe he knows something we don’t know.”
However, Swick is not worried about what Hughes has said and is aware that Georges St-Pierre is the best welterweight in the division overall and with a win over Dan ‘The Outlaw’ Hardy, he is focused at the task at hand in order to meet the French Canadian champion down the road.
