With most of the UFC roster set to headline future events during the year 2010 and their champions recovering from injuries or other ailments there has been speculation that a heavyweight showdown between former PRIDE and UFC champion Antonio ‘Minotauro’ Nogueira (32-5-1) and the unbeaten Cain Velasquez (7-0) was in the works for UFC 108 in early January and it now appears that match-up will be taking place on the card.

According to MMAWeekly.com multiple sources close to the event say the bout will in fact be going down at the UFC 108 card as either the main event or the co-main event of the evening.

Following a very bad performance in a loss to Frank Mir at UFC 92 last December, Minotauro Nogueira bounced back with a much improved performance in a unanimous decision victory over Randy Couture at UFC 102 this past August and is looking to get another shot at the UFC heavyweight title with a win over the double tough Cain Velasquez who has won all 5 of his fights inside the Octagon in just 7 career MMA fights with recent triumphs over the likes of Cheick Kongo at UFC 99 in June and a dominating performance over former IFL heavyweight champion Ben Rothwell last month at UFC 104, but Nogueira will be a huge threat to land the young AKA standout his first career defeat as he will match Cain on the ground and in the stand-up game as well.

It is also more than likely that the winner of this bout will be getting the next shot at the heavyweight championship as they will have to wait for current title holder Brock Lesnar to recuperate from his illness in order to face fellow heavyweight contender Shane Carwin as their fight was scrapped from the UFC 106 card then bounced as the potential UFC 108 headliner as well.

UFC 108 will be held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on January 2, 2010 and will be live on pay-per-view.
