There have been rumors for quite sometime that the Ultimate Fighting Championship has been looking to bring aboard Renzo Gracie to the organization and now according to the rumor we first reported the Gracie family member will be potentially making his Octagon debut against former welterweight champion Matt Hughes at UFC 109 in February of 2010.
According to Heavy.com Renzo who has been in negotiations with the UFC has been approached about the match-up along with Hughes, but bout agreements are still yet to be distributed at this time.
Renzo Gracie last competed in February of 2007 in the inaugural EliteXC event on Showtime where he won via disqualification to Frank Shamrock in the main event and has since been working with other young fighters in his gyms nationwide, but has been aspiring a comeback to the sport of MMA for sometime now.
As for Matt Hughes he has only competed once in 2009 as he was able to score a unanimous decision victory over another former welterweight champion in Matt Serra back at UFC 98 in May and has since re-signed with the UFC to a new contract extension.
Let’s not forget that Hughes has already fought a Gracie in his career as he soundly defeated the legendary hall of famer Royce Gracie back at UFC 60 IN 2006, but has also rejected fights against top welterweight contenders such as Josh Koscheck, Mike Swick and Jon Fitch in the last few months as Hughes has stated in previous reports that the AKA trio is “not in his league”. But yet Renzo Gracie is?
There was also a rumor that Royce Gracie was going to face Demian Maia at the UFC 109 card, but those rumors are nothing but a big rumor as Maia has been reportedly scheduled to face Dan Miller.
We will keep you posted once this fight has been officially booked by the UFC in the weeks to come.
