With the year 2009 coming to a close a couple of big MMA cards were expected to be held in Japan, but it now appears that the World Victory Road promotion who is behind the Sengoku fight cards will be canceling their New Year’s Eve event. However, they may be joining Fight and Entertainment Group (FEG) promoted events such as DREAM and K-1 and will have their fighters compete on the upcoming Fields Dynamite event in the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan.
According to SI.com’s Josh Gross he posted on his Twitter that the two Japanese based promotions will in fact not be going head to head, but the possibilities would look very good for both promotions in the process.
WVR was expected to make an announcement on a TV deal earlier this week, but has since been canceled leading to believe the event was going to be scrapped which has been officially confirmed by BloodyElbow.com since then.
FEG head official Tanigawa has announced that retired K-1 legend Masato will be headlining the Dynamite!!2009 card against Andy Souwer in the main event plus the “Super Hulk” Tournament finals match between Ikuhisa ‘The Punk’ Minowa taking on Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou as well.
Tanigawa did not confirm any co-promotion with WVR Sengoku or now the Sengoku Raiden Championship, but the expected main event bout between Japanese gold medalists Judoka’s Hidehiko Yoshida and Satoshi Ishii making his MMA debut will keep FEG officials very intrigued to take the fight on.
We will keep you posted if this co-promotion will turn out to be true.
