With recent reports saying that the Ultimate Fighting Championship will not be going to Columbus, Ohio for their usual March event it appears that the organization could possibly be heading back into the tri-state area and back to Newark, New Jersey for UFC 111 where the last event held there was for UFC 78 in November of 2007 which was headlined by Ultimate Fighter winners Rashad Evans and Michael Bisping.
A source close to the UFC told MMAJunkie.com of the news earlier today.
The Garden State was a frequent home for the UFC earlier on in this decade as they would occupy the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, but for the UFC 78 event in Newark the promotion held their fight card in the new Prudential Center which had 14,071 fans in attendance plus a solid gate of $2.1 million.
If that is the case then it would be great news for MMA fans in the New York/New Jersey area even though the UFC is still not allowed to hold events in the Empire State the Garden State is just a few miles away.
When the UFC comes to Columbus, Ohio for March they usually help bring tourists into the state capital as they also hold the Arnold Sports Festival, but it appears that the UFC’s little brother promotion the WEC will be taking their place for the 2010 blowout.
Should the UFC 111 event be held in New Jersey expects hometown fighters such as Frankie Edgar, Ricardo Almeida, Kurt Pellegrino and the Miller brothers Jim and Dan to be potential candidates to compete for the March 2010 event. But, unlike UFC 78 the card needs a much bigger main event this time around.
So anybody with me for a Georges St-Pierre vs Dan Hardy welterweight title bout for main event?
looks like I will finally be going to a UFC event
