Josh Thomson vs Gilbert Melendez Title Fight Headlines StrikeForce "Evolution"  | read this item

Late last week there was report that a lightweight title bout between Josh ‘The Punk’ Thomson (16-2) and Gilbert ‘El Nino’ Melendez (16-2) was under strong consideration to head line the StrikeForce “Evolution” event on December 19 in San Jose, California and now it appears the championship match-up will be the card’s main event of the evening.

MMAJunkie.com reports the long awaited rematch between both men has been confirmed and will be atop the Showtime televised event.

The first encounter between Thomson and Melendez was in June of 2008 when Melendez at the time was champion was outmatched by ‘The Punk’ in all five rounds of the fight and was his best performance to date en route to becoming the new StrikeForce lightweight champion, but since winning the title Thomson has fought once since then with a win in a non title affair against Ashe Bowman at the StrikeForce at the Playboy Mansion II card last September and has had a string of bad luck with numerous leg and foot injuries having to bow out of fights with Yves Edwards and Melendez on two separate occasions, but hopefully the fourth time will be the charm for the current champ.

In Thomson’s absence, Melendez became the interim lightweight champion and according to a source close to the event also told MMAJunkie.com that StrikeForce and their partners DREAM out in Japan were considering to have Bellator FC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez as Melendez next opponent, but it appears that Thomson is finally fit and ready to give it a go.

And finally with barring injuries this will be the first time a title will be defended in StrikeForce without an interim being included.
