UFC 111 in New Jersey Possibly Featuring St-Pierre vs Hardy as Main EventThis past weekend following the UFC 106 event in Las Vegas, Nevada UFC President Dana White hinted that big changes could be made in early 2010, but it now appears that the welterweight title fight between Georges St-Pierre (19-2) and Dan Hardy (23-6) could take place in March for UFC 111 in Newark, New Jersey at the Prudential Center.
MMAFanhouse.com reports that a source close to the upcoming event says that the 170 pound championship bout could be serving as the main event.
Welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre is amongst one of the best fighters in the world pound for pound and has reeled off six straight victories beating some of the top 170 pounders in the UFC such as Matt Hughes, Jon Fitch and most recently Thiago Alves at UFC 100 this past July and has also been a spokesperson for the sport of MMA gaining major endorsement deals with Gatorade and Under Armour in the process.
Meanwhile since making his way to the UFC last year Dan Hardy has won all four fights inside the Octagon with a big win earlier this month at UFC 105 by picking up a unanimous decision win over Mike Swick to become the new welterweight number 1 contender to St-Pierre’s title.
The bout has also been mentioned to be taking place in February at UFC 110 in Australia to replace the Wanderlei Silva vs Yoshihiro Akiyama main event, but that will no longer be the case as Wanderlei Silva will now be facing Michael Bisping for that card. However, if the UFC 111 card is held in Newark, NJ for March than it will be the first time the promotion returns to the city since UFC 78 back in November of 2007.
Once we receive official word from the UFC on the St-Pierre vs Hardy clash, then we will keep you informed.
