King Mo Lawal

“King Mo” Lawal (5-0) will make his promotional debut for StrikeForce on December 19, against veteran Mike Whitehead. While most observers are overlooking Whitehead, he is one of the fighters toughest challengers to date.

In a interview with FiveOuncesofPain.com King Mo spoke about fighting Mike Whitehead at “StrikeForce Evolution”and  answering his critics, who he thinks will downplay his win if he defeats Whitehead who has won 15 of his last 16 fights.

“I’m going to have to beat him up. You know how I see it, right. I beat Whitehead and people are going to be like, “Oh, Whitehead… he wasn’t even that good, you know…. Mike’s not even in the top ten”. Then I beat [Gegard] Mousasi and it’s like, “Oh, Mousasi was overrated…. this and that”. You know, that’s all I feel like I’m going to get right now. I won’t get any credit until I’m in the UFC, and even then people will probably find reasons not to give me credit for anything anyways, you know what I’m saying?”

King Mo also was asked about his thoughts on StrikeForce light heavyweight champion Gegard Mousasi, who he feels is not as good as he is being hyped.

04_MOUSASI(lft)_vs_SOKOUDJOU_6P1Y7039“On top of that, he’s been fighting for so long; What has really changed in his game? If you watch his fights from back then and now, what’s changed? I just don’t think he’s that powerful. I don’t think he has that much power, and I don’t think he’s that strong. I don’t think his conditioning is all that great either.”

King Mo is a star in the making and so is Gegard Mousasi, but I hope StrikeForce does not rush them into a fight without properly building the fight. StrikeForce has a limited number of options when it comes to signing free agent 205 pound fighters for challengers to Mousasi’s title, but they should handle this fight with care.

Fedor is the star of their promotion, but Mousasi and King Mo are also fighters that could potentially carry that torch as well. Now that Sengoku looks like they will be history by the end of the year, StrikeForce has to make a major push to keep “King Mo” longterm.

Mousasi does not look like he is in a rush to fight for DREAM at the moment either, so their rivalry could be the staple in building their 205 pound division.
