At UFC 106 Josh Koscheck made a statement that he was the true number one contender to Georges St.Pierre’s welterweight title, not U.K fighter Dan Hardy. There was just one problem with Koscheck’s theory, he has recently lost to Paulo Thiago at UFC 95 and Hardy is still undefeated.
According to Ariel Helwani of MMA.Fanhouse.com, Josh Koscheck will get a chance to avenge his TKO loss to Paulo Thiago in a rematch at UFC 109.
Paulo Thiago (12-1) was handed the first loss of his career at UFC 100 by Koscheck’s team mate, Jon Fitch by unanimous decision. He then bounced back with a impressive win over Jacob Volkmann at UFC 106 by unanimous decision. If he can beat Koscheck again and get his record up to 3-1 in the UFC, he will definitely be in the thick of the title hunt.
Josh Koscheck (14-4) has won two straight since losing to Thiago at UFC 95. He defeated Frank Trigg at UFC 103 by TKO (Punches) and then went on to defeat Anthony Johnson at UFC 106 on short notice by submission (rear naked choke). Needless to say, if Koscheck can beat Thiago and avenge his loss he will probably secure the next welterweight title shot.
This should make for a interesting fight since Koscheck was actually beating Thiago pretty badly at UFC 95, but his one mistake cost him the fight. I wonder how much of a role that will play in this fight, will Koscheck be tentative or could Thiago be more aggressive? We will have to wait and find out.
