Update: Sherdog has updated their original post and confirmed the Nogueira vs Velasquez fight will not be for a interim heavyweight title.

Antonio Minotauro Nogueira’s boxing coach Luiz Dorea tells Sherdog.com that his upcoming fight against Cain Velasquez is for the interim heavyweight title.

“We regret Brock Lesnar’s situation, but Rodrigo is waiting to know if he will fight for the interim belt,” said Dorea Thursday. “He is expected to fight for the interim belt against Cain Velasquez at UFC 110 in Australia, but that’s not officially confirmed yet.”

Nogueira is already one of the most accomplished fighters in the sport ever and has won the UFC interim heavyweight title before, when then heavyweight champion Randy Couture retired during a contract dispute. Nogueira will now get a chance to add to his legacy, but will have a big task ahead of him when he faces off against Cain Velasquez.

Velasquez will be looking to start his own legacy, a win over Nogueira would be an enormous step forward in his career. He would also estqablish himself as a top 5 heavyweight in the sport.

No one knows if either fighter will ever meet Brock Lesnar to unify the title, so there is also a chance the winner of this fight could become the permanent heavyweight champion.
