As we all knew for sometime the San Jose, California based StrikeForce organization will be making their debut in “The Sunshine State” of Florida on January 30, 2010 and will have StrikeForce 145 pound womans middleweight champion Cristiane ‘Cyborg’ Santos and welterweight title contender Nick Diaz co-headlining the card. Plus, the MMA debut of former NFL star Herschel Walker as well.
The January StrikeForce event will be held at the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Florida which will likely be aired live on Showtime.
This past August the young Brazilian wrecking machine known as Cris Cyborg picked up a first round stoppage of Gina Carano to become the first female fighter to ever be crowned a champion in a major Mixed Martial Arts organization and will be making her first defense of her championship with her opponent expected to be Marloes Coenen who defeated Roxanne Modafferi to become number 1 contender to the title.
Nick Diaz has won both of his first fights in the organization in grand fashion as he first knocked off former StrikeForce middleweight champion in April and followed it up with a third round submission victory over heavy hitting Scott Smith in the month of June. With the welterweight championship probably up for grabs Diaz will possibly be facing Jay Hieron who was originally scheduled to fight ‘The Thoroughbred’ in the month of August.
And last but not least former NFL running back Herschel Walker will be making his MMA debut at the age of 47 and is a sixth degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do as well as learning other disciplines such as Muay Thai and Kempo while training with the American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose with the likes of StrikeForce lightweight champion Josh ‘The Punk’ Thomson. Walker will be competing as a heavyweight, but does not have an opponent at the time.
We will keep you posted on more details regarding this StrikeForce event in the days and weeks to come.
