Frank Mir knows how it feels to have to sit on the sidelines after a injury and not be able to defend the UFC heavyweight title. After his Motorcycle accident destroyed his leg, Mir was out of action for almost two years and had the title he won at UFC 48 stripped.
Now with current UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar on the shelf, Mir believes the UFC should not create a interim title. Mir was quoted by Sherdog.com at a recent Q&A session and said he has faith that Lesnar can and will return to the UFC.
“He’s a pretty tough guy,” Mir said. “If anybody can get through it, it has to be him. I want him to be able to be there for his kids. Do I still want to go in there and rip his arm off? Absolutely.” Mir also said that the UFC should not create a interim heavyweight title, he feels they should wait until making a decision to strip Lesnar.
Mir brings up a interesting point about a potential ”interim” title, but a year is a long time for the UFC to wait with three champions returning from injuries.
While a year under normal circumstances is a good amount of time to wait Lyoto Machida, Georges St.Pierre and Anderson Silva will all go over 6 months since their last title defenses when they do return.
Lesnar last defended his title at UFC 100 in win over Mir, but has no definite return date. His situation is a lot different then the other three champions, because his health issue may prevent him from ever returning to the cage.
I agree with Mir on that the interim tag takes away some of the title’s luster. I also believe the UFC should wait until a month before February 21, and book the Nogueira vs Velaquez heavyweight fight for the title if and only if Lesnar does not have a definitive return date by then.
What do you think? let me know in the comment section and I will respond.
