Update: According to MMAJunkie.com the rumored light heavyweight matchup between Vladimir Matyushenko and Steve Cantwell will be taking place on the UFC 108 undercard on January 2, 2010 as they have confirmed with Matyushenko’s manager, Nima Safapour of No Limits Media Group that bout agreements have been signed and should be made official within the next few days.
Original Post:
It appears that another fight inside the Octagon could be taking place at some point in January in a light heavyweight fight with longtime veteran and former IFL champion Vladimir Matyushenko taking on former WEC 205 pound title holder Steve Cantwell at either UFC 108 on January 2, 2010 or a week later at UFC Fight Night 20 on January 11, 2010.
While fielding questions for the fans on the Underground Forums ‘The Janitor’ was asked if he would be fighting Steve Cantwell in his next fight and he replied by saying that he would be fighting in January, but could not confirm the opponent as of yet.
Vladimir Matyushenko (23-4) is a well traveled veteran competing under such other organizations as the IFL and most recently with Affliction and upon making his second tour of duty with the UFC, he gained a unanimous decision victory over newcomer Igor Pokrajac back at UFC 103 this September in Dallas, Texas.
As for Steve Cantwell (7-3) this may be a win or lose your spot on the UFC roster as he has lost back to back unanimous decision defeats in very tough matchups against Luiz Cane at UFC 97 in April and to Brian Stann at UFC Fight Night 19 in September as well with his lone Octagon win coming over Razak Al-Hassan at UFC Fight for the Troops last December with a devastating armbar submission where he broke Hassan’s arm in the process.
Once both parties have confirmed this bout we will keep you posted as soon as the news makes headway.
