After making a successful debut on national television, the San Jose, California based StrikeForce organization will be returning to primetime on CBS in the month of April in 2010 which is expected to have former PRIDE champions Fedor Emelianenko and Dan Henderson competing on the card.
CBS Senior Executive VP Kelly Kahl has told MMAWeekly.com with confirmation that the network and StrikeForce do have a date at some point in the month of April, but are now in the process of booking a date and a venue as well.
Kahl said that former PRIDE heavyweight champion and StrikeForce’s prized asset Fedor Emelianenko will be on the card, but an opponent for ‘The Last Emperor’ was not announced as of yet. But, the promotion’s heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem could serve as his likely possible opponent in a title match granted that Overeem does not decide to stay fighting Japan at the last minute.
Also, in addition to Fedor competing on the televised fight card will be newly signed Dan Henderson who made big news last week by signing on with StrikeForce after competing for the UFC the last few years since the demise of PRIDE where Hendo was a champion in two weight classes (middleweight & light heavyweight). And as far as an opponent goes for Henderson, it could turn out to be new StrikeForce middleweight champion Jake Shields who is willing to test himself against top caliber fighters such as Henderson.
But, there could also be a bout for Henderson with StrikeForce light heavyweight champion Gegard Mousasi as well, but the good thing is that MMA will be back on national tv with CBS as Kahl says something will be finalized very soon.
The first StrikeForce event on CBS was in the month of November as Fedor Emelianenko knocked out Brett Rogers in the main event where the card was ranked third in the ratings behind EliteXC “HEAT” last October and the first CBS event with EliteXC titled “Primetime” where Kimbo Slice also made his first splash on TV as well, so expect more great fights to come out of this next fight card as we keep you posted as soon as further announcements break.
