After Frank Mir’s destruction of Cheick Kongo at UFC 107 this past weekend, it was clear that he was ready to come back and compete for a title. Mir was hoping he would compete for Brock Lesnar’s heavyweight title, but has made it known that Shane Carwin was a good option for a possible opponent as well.
MMA Fanhouse.com is reporting that a fight between Mir and current number one contender Shane Carwin is in the works for UFC 111, on March 27, 2010 from Newark, New Jersey.
Frank Mir (13-4) was very impressive this past weekend at UFC 107 in his win over Cheick Kongo. Mir was noticeably bigger in the Octagon and has added 25 pounds of extra muscle according to his trainer. Mir felt the addition of muscle mass was necessary after losing to Brock Lesnar at UFC 100, so he can deal with the bigger heavyweight champion’s strength. Now Mir will be able to use his extra strength against Carwin when they meet at UFC 111.
Shane Carwin (11-0) is riding a 3 fight win streak in the UFC into this fight, but has not fought since defeating Gabriel Gonzaga at UFC 96. When Carwinenters the cage with Mir at UFC 111 on March 27, it will over a year since his Octagon appearances. Injuries to Brock Lesnar have prevented Carwin from cashing in his number one contender guarantee.
This should be a great fight in what is shaping out to be an amazing card, that will feature Georges St.Pierre vs Dan Hardy’s welterweight title fight as the main event. We will keep you up to date as soon as we hear if this fight will be confirmed for March.
I thought Machida/Shogun II was on this card aswell?
