With so many injuries piling up of the UFC 108 fight card it appears that another hit has been made on the upcoming WEC 46 fight card as well as bantamweight Frank Gomez (8-1) will have to withdraw from his bout with Wagnney Fabiano (12-2) as the promotion is already in motion to seek out a new opponent.
News of the injury was first reported by Mauro Ranallo on The MMA Hour and has since been confirmed by MMAJunkie.com that Gomez has in fact suffered a setback during a recent training session at Greg Jackson’s camp in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Frank Gomez was riding a current two fight win streak going into WEC 46 with wins over Noah Thomas at WEC 41 in June and another win over Seth Dikun last month at WEC 44 and a win over Fabiano would have made Gomez a serious contender in the bantamweight division, but will have to wait for another opportunity to present itself.
Meanwhile Wagnney Fabiano will still be competing on the card as he makes his debut at the 135 pound weight class after suffering a submission defeat in his last fight at WEC 43 this past October at the hands of newcomer Mackens Semerzier and is now looking to become a contender in his new home as teammate Jose Aldo became champion in his old weight class at 145 pounds.
We will keep you posted as soon as a replacement has been announced by WEC officials.
WEC 46 will be held at the ARCO Arena in Sacramento, California on January 10, 2010 and will feature lightweight champion Jamie Varner taking on interim title holder Ben Henderson in the main event live on VERSUS.
