Shane Carwin was supposed to face off against Brock Lesnar at UFC 106 and UFC 108 to fight for the UFC heavyweight title, but was forced to wait on both occasions in hopes the champion would recover from his illness.
Now after almost 10 months outside of the Octagon Carwin will meet up against Frank Mir, who also wants to settle a score for the UFC heavyweight title at a future date.
Mir is not only a formidable opponent he is also the biggest test of Carwin’s career, but he is confident he will pass that test with when they meet at UFC 111.
“It’s an honor to not only fight for the interim UFC heavyweight title, but to do so against a respected former champion like Frank Mir,” said Carwin. “This is going to be a fight to remember for the fans, and I plan on making it one of my most memorable performances as well. Beating Frank is going to be a test, but I’m confident that it’s a test I will pass with flying colors.”
Many observers feel Shane Carwin is the underdog coming into this fight at UFC 111, cause Mir has the experience advantage and a better all around game.
The only problem is that most of those observers have not seen Carwin last past the first round of a fight, there for do not know what level his ground game is at. We do know that Carwin won a NCAA division 2 title while wrestling in college, which was Mir’s downfall during his fight against Lesnar at UFC 100.
We also know that Mir is known through out his career for pulling off submissions off of his back to end fights in a moments notice.
In the stand-up department Carwin will have the power advantage and ability to end the fight with one punch, just like he did to Gabriel Gonzaga at UFC 96. Mir will have the advantage in terms of precision and the ability to land clean combinations, he may use that advantage to pick apart Carwin as the fight goes on to the later rounds.
The eventual “X-factor” for this fight could be Mir and Carwin’s cardio and endurance, but given all the weapons in their arsenal it is possible their ability to conserve energy in the later rounds could also become a non-factor as well.

I got Mir he isnt Gonzaga if he rocks Carwin he will finish him. Go back and watch the Gonzaga fight he got Rocked and Gonzaga blew the chance to finish him and he clinched instead of following up with more punches.

Carwin, KO.
Mir is over-confident with his new size and standup, he will want to show off, however Carwin isn’t Kongo.
